Reiki is a Japanese word meaning Universal Life Force Energy (Rei-universal life force and Ki-energy). This practice of Reiki is a gentle energy healing modality based on the early twentieth century teachings of Mikao Usui in Japan.
The practitioner's hands are placed above or gently on the client (with their permission). As the energy begins to flow, there may be a sensation of heat, tingling or comfort and relaxation. This healing energy can stimulate the body's innate ability to heal itself. Reiki has been used for stress relief, relaxation, overall improvement of well-being and health. Reiki is also used for treatment of chronic pain and anxiety as well as for symptom relief of the side effects of cancer treatments.
Hospitals are increasingly using Reiki as it is found to compliment conventional medical treatments. Those in hospice care find it useful because it can help to alleviate pain and transition in a peaceful state.
